Bhubaneswar: The BJD has opposed the proposed Chilika water aerodrome project, which was approved by the Centre recently, citing that it would harm biodiversity of the lake.
“The proposed water aerodrome will affect the marine ecosystem of Chilika Lake,” said MLA Sanjay Dasburma here on Monday. He urged the Union Government to reconsider the proposal and save the ecosystem in the Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon. Even Revenue Minister Maheswar Mohanty opposed the idea.
BJD MP Tathagata Satpathy strongly reacted to the Centre’s proposal for construction of infrastructure for operation of regular seaplanes in Chilika.
“Quelle horreur! Proposed amphibian airport inside Chilika lake, one of the largest brackish water lakes which gets thousands of winged visitors from around the globe, will surely make birds and marine life to vanish forever. I strongly oppose such dumb ideas,” Satpathy tweeted.
The Centre has identified five States, Odisha, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Assam, for development of water aerodromes in lakes and large water sources. Chilika got in-principle approval from the Union Government last week.
As per proposal of the Centre, infrastructure would be constructed in Chilka and Sabarmati River Front and Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat in the first phase.
