Report by Nishapati Nayak; Koraput: National Press Day was celebrated by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Central University of Orissa at its Landiguda campus on 16.11.2017. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty was the Chief Guest on this occasion. OSD, Examination, Admin. and Student affairs, Prof. Bhabani Prasad Rath, Dean Academics Prof. Kishore Chandra Raut and HoD I/c, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Dr. Pradosh Ku. Rath were present on the dais. Prof. Mohanty advised the students and scholars of Journalism to pursue the profession with dedication.
Prof. Mohanty in his lecture stressed the need for ethics in journalism. He said “today journalism is at the cross roads and it’s time for the media personnel, the journalists to introspect themselves and follow ethics in journalism for the development of society. The power of media is undeniable in present days but media must know how to exercise its power for the betterment of human being and society. It was important to enrich our knowledge base, rather than glamorize journalism. We must appreciate the role of communication in the world scenario and develop the habit of extensive reading”. He motivated aspiring journalists of the department by giving example of famous journalists, novelists and literary persons who pursued journalism as a career.
On this occasion Prof. Rath, OSD stressed the need of a central body to certify the journalists in India to maintain the quality of journalism. Prof. Raut, motivated the students by saying that the future of journalism is bright in India and it plays a crucial role in nation building. Dr. Pradosh Kumar Rath, HoD I/c Dept. of J &MC presided over the meeting and briefed about the significance of the Day and the problems and prospects with the Press Council of India.
Other faculty members Sh. Sourav Gupta, Sh. Sujit Kumar Mohanty, Sony Parhi, B.K. Srinivas and Dr. Phagunath Bhoi, PRO also spooked on this occasion and Ms. Talat Jahan Begum, lecturer, Dept. of J &MC gave vote of thanks. Ms. Rojalin anchored the event. Students, scholars, faculty and staff of the University were present at large on this occasion.
