Bhubaneswar: Kalinga Zen Buddhist Mahasangha today observed Parinirvana Day, thedeath of Goutama Buddha in IRC Village Mahasangha facility in Bhubaneswar. On the occasion the speakers threw light on the teaching of Goutama Buddha and its relevance in present day society. Speaking on the occasion, eminent academician, former VC and Buddhist researcher Prof.. Gouranga Charan Nayak stressed on the importance of
Zen Buddhism.
Among others Buddhist Scholar and former VC of Utkal University of Culture Dr. Bimalendu Mohanty, Secretary of Mahabodhi Society , Dr. Suren Mohapatra was also present in the occasion. Dr. Varish Panigrahi, President of Kalinga Zen Buddhist Mahasangha described the works done by Zen Mahasangha and the activities lined up in coming years.
Usually Buddha Purnima is observed as Gautama Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. It falls on the day of the full moon in May. Speakers are of the opinion that, the observance of Parinirvana Day is first of its kind in Odisha and wished Zen Mahasangha will continue it. Parinirvana Day is a Buddhist holiday which commemorates the death of Buddha and is celebrated on February 15th. This day – also known as Nirvana Day – is celebrated because it is believed that Buddha’s death should be celebrated because at his death he had reached Enlightenment and had finally reached the stage of Nirvana.
Prakash Chandra Nayak of Kalinga Natya Nirbana, a Buddhist organization in Jajpur’s Buddhist Circuit also spoke on the occaision. Vice-President Brigadier Niranjan Dhal concluded day with gave vote of thanks. On the event, an Odia book on philosophy and traditions of Zen Buddhism, a song in Odia and a Buddhist interest map in Bhubaneswar released.
