Bhubaneswar: Elderly are the backbone of our social structure. Without them we cannot imagine a world of our own as they have seen the world and always there to give us their valuable consultation with every matters. Thus on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons today, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) organized an innovative event for the elderly loaded with games and recreation at Sahid Nagar Kalyan Mandap.
While during the preliminary session State Coordinator Patanjali Yuva Bharat Odisha Pitambar Sahoo addressed the senior citizens and demonstrated three “Pranayams’’ and three “Asanas’’ for healthy life, other events like music chair, catch the ball, spoon and lemon race, sloka recitation, “rangoli’’ making, blow the balloon, bow and arrow and nail the tail were also organized.
BSCL General Manager (Administration) Diptirani Sahoo and former councilor of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Saswati Mishra gave sway the prizes to various winners of the events and competitions.
Later, yoga expert and State Coordinator Patanjali Yuva Bharat Odisha Pitambar Sahoo said “in the busy life when even elderly have become lonely at many homes yoga practice can make them physically and mentally fit. The senior citizens can benefit immensely from yoga and they should adopt it as soon as possible.’’
Professor Aditya Kumar Mohanty, President Sahid Nagar Senior Citizens Association, said “the initiative by BSCL will help senior citizens a lot and regular activities in future can spread the message of staying fit and healthy.’’
Managing trustee of Kitchen Garden Association Maheswar Khillar was of the opinion that BSCL’s celebration of the International Day of Older Persons would inspire others to follow in the footsteps and thus others would be interested to organize events for the senior citizens across the city.
Professor GBN Chayani, Secretary Sahid Nagar Senior Citizens Association, said “we will spread the message of these activities among the senior citizens so that continuous activities would be possible in Sahid Nagar and Satya Nagar area.’’
BSCL and UNFPA have been working tirelessly in the city to strengthen the social components of the Smart City Proposal with Humara Bachpan Trust as implementing partner. Till date the focus had been on young and adolescent people, boys, girls and women. The attempt is now to expand its reach to involve other age group of people with the process.
In the same line this year BSCL is observing International Day of Older Persons or elderly people. Prior to the programme discussions were made with the senior citizens group of Sahid Nagar and Satyna Nagar to share the idea and request them to be a part of the programme and share their expectations from a proposed recreation centre which is in plan to be opened up in the IPSC Sahid Nagar very soon.
