Supreme Court Upholds Section 6A of Citizenship Act in Assam, Grants Citizenship to Pre-1971 Immigrants

The Supreme Court, in a 4:1 majority verdict, has upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, which pertains to the grant of Indian citizenship to illegal immigrants in Assam. This provision allows citizenship for immigrants who entered Assam before March 24, 1971, as part of the Assam Accord aimed at resolving the state’s long-standing issues related to immigration.
