Report by Badal Tah; Rayagada: In Durgi village of Bissam Cuttack Block, a woman labourer named Rashmita Urlaka got into the newly constructed latrine tank of Sri M Satyanarayana to clean the wood used for construction. As she did not come out another labour got down to know the situation; but he also did not come out. As both the labourers took time to come out, the mason named Purna Takri went inside and he also did not come out. Seeing this Satyanarayana called a few youths who were playing volleyball nearby. To rescue all the three inside the tank, three other persons named Surya Patra, Bansidhar Patra and Kartika Gouda got down the tank. When nobody came out, the upper plate of the tank was broke open with the help of a JCB and six were rescued and were admitted in the nearby Christian Hospital, Bissam Cuttack. Dr.Jhonny Oomen of the hospital declared all dead except Kartik due to suffocation. Kartik is still in ICU and he may be referred if the condition does not improve, said Dr Oomen.
The police IIC, SDPO, Sub-Collector, Gunupur, MLA Sri Jagannath Saraka arrived on the spot. Immediate assistance was provided to the members of the bereaved families. The locals did have a road blockade keeping the ambulance carrying the corpses and demanded more assistance for the family members of the deceased persons. The police is investigating the exact reasons of the deaths. Sri Kaliram Majhi, BJP leader, has requested the CM to grant Rupees fife lakhs each to the members of the deceased.
