Initiative with AMRI Hospital brings world-class liver care to Odisha
Bhubaneswar: In continuation of its commitment to bringing world-class healthcare to the doorstep in most Indian cities, Medanta – The Medicity, today announced its first liver OPD facility (Medanta Liver Clinic) in Bhubaneswar. The facility in association with AMRI Hospital located at Khandagiri will commence operation on 13th November 2017 with Dr. A.S.Soin, Chairman, Institute of Liver Transplantation & Regenerative Medicine, Medanta – The Medicity and Dr. Prashant Bhangui, Senior Consultant, Institute of Liver Transplant & Regenerative Medicine, Medanta – The Medicity available for Consultation for all liver related problems. The OPD will function every month and offer patients from Odisha access to world-class care for liver related problems.

Dr. A.S Soin who leads India’s largest and most successful liver transplant program at Medanta – The Medicity, in Gurgaon, Delhi NCR, has to his credit more than 2700 liver transplants till date in the country, including more than 300 from Odisha and around. Dr Soin said “Liver transplantation is a complex procedure requiring multidisciplinary care and a large dedicated team which works in perfect coordination to achieve optimal results in patients with end stage liver disease. Rapidly changing lifestyles are leading to a higher incidence of liver disease. With the launch of this facility, we will address the liver health concerns of patients in Odisha better, and they will now have a facility for world class treatment for liver failure at their doorstep. It is estimated that at least 10,000 people die from liver failure and liver cancer in Odisha every year, and at least 2000 of them can be saved with timely liver transplant and other advanced treatments ,” added Dr Soin.

Dr. Prashant Bhangui added that the incidence of liver cancers is on the rise in India- now more than 100,000 new cases and more than 50,000 deaths per year. Both primary liver tumours (originating from liver cells, also called hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma), and secondary tumours of th liver (liver metastases or spread from other cancers like colon cancer) can be cured by liver surgery or transplantation if they are detected, and managed early. In addition to liver transplantation, we at Medanta specialize in complex liver and bile duct surgery, and use minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic liver techniques, which enable relatively painless and scar-less surgeries and quick post-operative recovery, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director, Medanta-The Medicity, said, “The initiative is in sync with our vision to offer world-class healthcare to citizens and our commitment to Odisha. We understood the need for a liver OPD in the capital city, and thus decided to partner with AMRI.”
