Bhubaneswar, 1/12/2021: Now Cancer patients will get World Class Treatment at an affordable price at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Department of Nuclear Medicine, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has started PET-CT services for the patients. AIIMS Bhubaneswar Director Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane today inaugurated the PET-CT service here. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Gitanjali said that it’s a much awaited addition to the facilities AIIMS Bhubaneswar already has and will be privileged to provide for the people of this region. She also appreciated the effort of faculty of Department of Nuclear Medicine, purchase section, engineering and all others for making it happen. This service will certainly benefit the people of Odisha, added Dr. Gitanjali. It may be noted here that AIIMS Bhubaneswar has now become the only government hospital in the eastern part of India and state of Odisha to have its own PET-CT equipment.
The installed PET-CT equipment is high end with 128-slice CT and LSO crystals, first of its kind in the state of Odisha, informed Dr. Kanhaiya Agrawal, Associate Professor, Nuclear Medicine. Due to high end equipment, radiation dose to the patient will be lesser with better imaging, leading to accurate diagnosis. PET-CT is used mainly in cancer patients to detect cancer, to determine whether a cancer has spread in the body, to assess the effectiveness of treatment, to determine if a cancer has returned after treatment, to evaluate prognosis. Further, it is used to determine the effects of a heart attack on areas of the heart, identify areas of the heart muscle that would benefit from angioplasty or coronary artery bypass surgery, evaluate brain abnormalities, such as tumors, memory disorders, seizures and other central nervous system disorders, map normal human brain and heart function.
The new addition of PET-CT service will be helpful to patients of Odisha and neighbouring states in getting world class cancer treatment at an affordable price. The PET-CT charges for patients will be 7500/- at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Medical Superintendent Prof. Dr. S N Mohanty, Dean Dr. Debashis Hota, DDA Mr. P K Ray also graced the occasion.
