Two Days to Go Cities all over the world will observe Earth Hour

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. The following year, Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participated.

Bhubaneswar is one of the few cities that are observing Earth Hour since 2007 where Households, Govt. Buildings, Monuments and businesses houses etc are turning off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. This year too like past years we at Local Governance Network requested municipal bodies, civil society groups, media houses, business groups, senior citizens and schools and colleges to observe the hour by switching off their lights.

The day is significant as it sends a message across that energy saving is a responsibility of every citizen. We believe like past eight years, people in Bhubaneswar & Odisha will observe the day this year too by sending a mass message that everyone is concern for living planet.

Last year over 180 countries across the world, switched off their lights for an hour to support action to create a sustainable future for the planet. This year it is estimated people over 10000 cities will join the global event to switch off many landmarks for the hour including Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, Granada’s Alhambra in Spain, Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, Athens’ Acropolis in Greece, India Gate in New Delhi, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi and Sydney’s Opera House, etc.

Please join us in observing Earth Hour between 8.30pm to 9.30pm this Saturday 30th March 2019.

Exactly one day from now, homes, schools, businesses and iconic landmarks across the planet will turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. So do like past years we have requesting Govt. Local Govt., Civil Society, Media House, Business, Citizens, and School Children to participate this year’s Earth Hour event. This year the date falls on Saturday 30th March at 8.30pm to 09.30 pm local time.

We expect like past years everyone around us will join celebrating Earth Hour 2019 in Bhubaneswar and other towns of Odisha along with millions of people around the world irrespective of race, religion, culture, geography and society on a single moment for the planet.

The city of Bhubaneswar and its citizens are actively participating since 2007.
