TSP programme of ICAR-CIFA launched in Koraput District, Odisha

 

Koraput: ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar in collaboration with State Fisheries Department, Koraput and Pragati, Koraput launched the Tribal Sub-Plan Programme for freshwater aquaculture development at Tribal Museum Campus, Koraput on 18 January, 2019. Total 500 participants including tribal farmers, Self Help Groups, line department functionaries, financial institutions, scientists,press and media took part in the meet.

Dr. B.C. Mohapatra, Principal Scientist and Chairman, TSP, ICAR-CIFA welcomed the participants and guests to the function. He highlighted the role of the institute in demonstrating the freshwater aquaculture
technologies to the selected tribal population of the country as a whole and Koraput District in particular.

Shri Gadadhar Parida, Ex-Collector of Koraput and Secretary, Sabara Srikhetra, Koraput as Chief Guest of the function inaugurated it and launched the TSP programme in Koraput District. He urged all the
functionaries to work hand in hand to make the TSP programme successful in the district. Dr (Mrs) K.D.
Mohapatra, Principal Scientist and Director’s Representative, ICAR-CIFA, in her presidential address
highlighted the role of fish culture for livelihood development and nutritional security of tribal population
of the country and being the cheap animal protein source, fish should be included in the food menu of all.
She also praised the involvement of women in aquaculture by which they can be more empowered.

Others who spoke in the programme were Deputy Director Fisheries, Koraput Zone, Jeypore Mr. Simanchal Behera; CDVO, Koraput Dr Santosh Kumar Tripathy; DDM, NABARD, Koraput Sri Murali Mishra; Project Director Watershed Mission, Koraput Sri Bhabani Sankar Kallo; Dean & Head, Department of Biodiversity Conservation & Natural Resources, Central University of Odisha, Prof. S.K. Palita; Head, ICAR-IISWC,Sunabeda & Secretary, Pragati, Koraput Mr. Prabhakar Adhikari. All of them praised the initiatives taken by ICAR-CIFA, Sate Fisheries Department and Pragati for development of Aquaculture for selected tribal framers of the District. Other dignitaries who were present as resource persons were SIC, MSSRF; Representative from Govt. College, Koraput; Asst. Horticulture Officer, etc. Dr. P.K. Sahoo, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFA proposed vote of thanks. Dr. (Mrs) Luna Panda, Executive Director, Pragati, Koraput Coordinated the inaugural programme.

In the side line of the porgramme pond water quality analysis camp was organized and the farmers who
brought water samples were analyzed and immediate advises on pond management were provided to
them. An interaction meet was conducted among the scientists–farmers–other institutions on aquaculture
and related issues.

Booklet on “Freshwater carp breeding and culture” and “Yearly aquaculture crop calendar” in Odia
language were released in this function.

Chief Technical Officer, Mr. D.Majhi Technical Officer and from State Fisheries Department DFO, AFOs, Koraput acted as resource person in the launching workshop and interaction meet.
