Notwithstanding increased literacy rate, superstition continues to grip minds in the tribal hinterland of koraput, Orissa where people, old and young, continue to be tortured and killed on the suspicion of practising witchcraft. Literacy has gone up and so has per capita income. But superstition refuses to go. With superstition ruling the roost in the tribal hinterland of Orissa, villagers young and old continue to be tortured and killed on the suspicion of practising witchcraft. While the worst-affected koraput district has recorded such deaths during the years, the toll is increasing in the same period. Some of the cases have been truly sensational;added balabhadra deep,SDPO.
A couple of months ago some villagers in the dudhari village of koraput fell ill. Thinking that witchcraft was behind the illness, villagers asked a ’tantric’ (black magician) to identify those practising sorcery and the ’tantric’ identified eight villagers. Then, a group of villagers took the men to a temple where they beat them up and extracted two teeth from each of them.Such crimes have become common in the state, specially in the tribal pockets where illiteracy is rampant. Sada disari(40) was suspected to be a witch when a village youth died of brain malaria. He could have been saved had medical facilities been available in the village ; added Dr.soubagya.
“Unlike in the tribal belt where such crimes are perpetrated by uneducated or semi-educated people, the culprits in the coastal region are mostly influential people who can manipulate evidence. These practiced leads to death and economically poor. This awareness drive will continue with banners ,slogans, posters in streets and villages.requested common health center (CHC),Asha workers, anganbadi workers to be alert while they are mislead. I know the difference between black magic and white magic. The man who believes that the secrets of the world are forever hidden lives in mystery and fear. Superstition will drag him down stated mr. mr.v.r.rao(Add.supritendentofpolice).
Sorisapadar under semliguda block and kalahandi colony of damonjodi under koraput district killing related to blackmagic and superstitions has been observed .to stop this and requested public to help police department to abolish this illegal practice ;stated piyush chotray, iic, semliguda.
