Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased in the boat mishap in Chilika. He has announced free treatment of the injured. Expressing deep grief at the loss of valuable lives, he conveyed heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families.
Police on Sunday arrested the owner of an ill-fated tourist boat which capsized in Chilika lake killing six persons including a minor girl on Saturday. The arrested was identified as Basant Behera.
The tragic incident took place at around 6 pm yesterday when the tourist boat with 18 people on board capsized due to strong winds and rain while returning to Balugaon from the Kalijai Temple, located on a small island in the lagoon.
A rescue team comprising personnel from fire brigade, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and Navy, along with local fishermen and divers, was engaged in a night-long search operation.
While the bodies of two persons were found on Saturday, four more bodies of the missing persons drowned in the deep water after the boat capsized were fished out on Sunday.
