Koraput: Nandanik, a theatre group based in Koraput, Odisha organized a school theatre competition to observe the World Theatre Day 2019. About 50 school students participated in the competition which was held in association with Bikash Vidyalaya, Koraput.
The inaugural dais comprised Shri Kamalesh Sahu & Gokul Chandra Pradhan, teachers of Bikash Vidyalaya and Monideepa Gupta & Saumendra Swain of Nandanik. The speakers emphasized on the importance of theatre in developing the school curriculum. Monideepa Gupta explained the history of the World Theatre Day and Saumendra Kumar Swain read out the message of the World Theatre Day which has been given by Carlos Celbral of Cuba and adapted in Odia by Subodh Patnaik.
The theatre competition had three categories-Skit, Mime and mono action. Out of 50 candidates 9 students have been specially marked by judges for their presentation quality. ‘We will give prizes to the students during Nandanik’s national theatre festival’, informed Monideepa Gupta.
“For Nandanik every day is a world theatre day as we engage with theatre throughout the year. However, theatre needs to be promoted in Koraput and we took this opportunity to encourage school students to take up theatre as they are the future. We have spotted great talents and will train them in Theatre”, said Prof Sourav Gupta, creative director of Nandanik.
The World Theatre Day is celebrated every year on 27 March since 1962 by the International Theatre Institute of UNESCO.
