Welcoming an international delegation from 29 countries who are visiting Odisha for their international training program on Environment Audit, Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik highlighted State Govt’s efforts toward preservation of the rich bio-diversity & promotion of sustainable eco-tourism. Highlights from his address:
• Forest cover in the state has increased from 31.36% in 2001 to 32.98% in 2017, an increase of about 2500 sq km in 16 years
• Odisha the first state in the country to prepare Climate Change Action Plan, activities in 12 identified sectors evaluated and second phase of the plan being readied
• Chilika, one of most important hotspots of biodiversity, shelters a wide variety of species inducing Irradwady Dolphins and a number of bird species. Also a watering ground for more than one million migratory birds and is a Ramsar site
• Chilika Development Authority undertaking active restoration measures to preserve the unique wetland
• Mass nesting of migratory Olive Ridley turtles has increased manifold due to proper management of coastal ecosystem
Chief Minister hoped that they would have a small glimpse of Odisha’s rich biodiversity during their stay and wished them all success in future endeavors.
