Dhenkanal: The Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) Dhenkanal on Monday organised a day-long seminar on ‘Is media the mirror of society?’ in collaboration with Odisha regional branch of Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) here on the campus. Speaking on the occasion retired IPS officer and former Director General (DG) of Odisha Police, Bipin Bihari Mishra urged the budding journalists to be objective while reporting news and convey provable facts to the news consumers.
“The journalists, intentionally or unintentionally, follow the bias and prejudices of the society. You can see the difference by observing the coverage of a terrorist attack by Indian and Pakistani media respectively. While the Indian media portrays such an event as an inhuman terror attack by militants, Pakistani media would present it as the brutality of Indian armed forces on so-called freedom fighters. This is the bias Journalists should get over with,” he added.
Professor Digambar Satpathy, Vice Chairman of IIPA also spoke on the occasion followed by a fruitful interactive session. He threw light on how media works as a reflection of society’s problems and prospects.
The Odisha regional branch has published several books concerning society and other issues. Officials of IIPA also donated several books to the institute’s library on behalf of the organisation.
