Shimla: Chief Minister Shri Virbhadra Singh today distributed the keys of flats constructed for the slum dwellers involving an expenditure of Rs.15 crore under Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme at Parwanoo in district Solan.
In his message on the occasion, he said that it was necessary to re-habilitate the slum dwellers for their sustainable living. As Parwanoo was a gateway to Himachal, the town should give a clean impression to the visitors. Nowadays, the number of slum dwellers was rising quickly as migrants usually leave their villages to seek better prospects in urban areas. Many end up in overcrowded slums, lacking even basic facilities and with no claim on the land or the property, he added.
He said evictions from slums and the demolition of settlements had risen as Indian cities expand and were spruced up under programmes as Smart Cities Missions, that aims to create centres with living standards. Thus an initiative for creating housing facilities for slum dwellers was a welcome step for fulfilling the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi of Clean Bharat.
The Chief Minister said that a sum of rupees one crore for industrial roads would be transferred soon .
Shri Virbhadra Singh laid foundation stones of 200 kiosks for street vendors on which Rs.6.30 crore would be spent besides two commercial complexes of HIMUDA to be constructed at a cost of Rs.88 crores.
