Bhubaneswar: Technology and a policy guidelines can shape the unorganised gemstone sector in Odisha which has potential to add substantial revenue to the state and also can boost the local economy in the region, said Shri R.K. Sharma, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to Govt., Department of Steel & Mines, Govt. of Odisha, in a workshop on Gemstones in Odisha – Exploration and Exploitation Strategy on 3rd January, 2020 in Bhubaneswar.
R. Vineel Krishna, MD, OMECL and OMC emphasized that there is huge potential for employment in gemstone industry in Odisha which needs to be tapped. OMECL will strengthen and upscale the exploration of gemstones in various regions of the state, he added. Shri Deepak Kumar Mohanty, IFS, Director of Mines and Dr. Ranjit Rath, CMD, MECL also deliberated on exploring gemstones in the state. Ramnath Praharaj, Director (Projects), OMECL, Sailendra Sinha, GM (Exploration) also present on the occasion.
The workshop was organized by Odisha Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (OMECL), a newly formed State Public Sector undertaking under the Department of Steel & Mines, Govt. of Odisha.
The workshop, conducted under the aegis of Department of Steel & Mines, Odisha, organized with an objective to explore new technologies and to discuss on the policy matters in the sector.
Experts from countries like Zambia, Columbia, Mozambique, Madagascar participated where large scale gemstone mining is being carried out. Senior government officials, eminent geoscientists, and CEOs of industries of the respective field also attended the program.
