Bhubaneswar: ‘No more worry for cleft children’. They can now avail a free cleft surgery and lead a normal life with a smile like others. Cleft care organization ABMSS and its partner Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe, Germany have been providing free cleft lip and palate surgery in the state in its cleft centre at SSB Hospital, Bhubaneswar. Free surgery also includes alveolar bone grafting, fistula repair and maxilla-facial surgery and many more.
The cleft centre will also provide free transportation, food and stay facility during the treatment at the hospital. Apart from that, the cleft centre will do a post-operative follow up for all treated cleft children to ensure comprehensive care for those children, said Mr Dillip Patnaik, in-charge of the cleft centre at the hospital.
In India, nearly 35000 children born with cleft every year and states like Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar account for around 30 to 50 percent of cleft cases. Studies show that majority of the cleft children come from the poor family and they cannot afford a treatment. Around 80 to 90 percent of the cleft children left untreated due to access to healthcare services and/or lack of awareness.
And without proper and timely treatment, the cleft children will face difficulty in eating, speaking and breathing untreated cleft in the long run can cause severe health complications that prevents a child from his/her normal growth. A simple cleft can a child come out of the difficulties and enable to lead a life with dignity, said Dr Dushyant R Prasad, head of ABMSS.
