Puri: The district administration removed the Biju Smruti Peetha, memorial of former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, from the Swargadwar in Puri town on Wednesday night in the presence of the district Collector and senior officials of the local administration.
The State Government had last month decided to remove the memorial from the Swargadwar and dedicate the entire crematorium area for the service of the people. This apart, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the development of the Swargadwar.
Under the project, modern facilities would be made available for cremation and the pallbearers at the Swargadwar, which was ravaged by Cyclone Fani on May 3 this year. This apart, facilitation of the cremation process during all seasons would be ensured.
Construction of restrooms for pallbearers, afforestation, facilities for collection and conservation of mortal remains would be parts of the project. The Chief Minister has directed to complete the work within six months.
