2-day film appreciation workshop begins at IIMC

Technical aspects and camera angles influences a film’s message: film critic and author Dr Piyush Roy

Dhenkanal: Instead of simply watching a movie, understanding the major aspects of a movie is more important, but as a common audience you may not understand various aspects of a film without understanding the language of the film. The national award winning film critic and author Dr Piyush Roy said during the inaugural session of a two-day film appreciation workshop at Indian Institute of Mass Communication in Dhenkanal on Wednesday.
The first day of the workshop began with the screening of the documentary movie, The Pleasures of Indian cinema, a film by Piyush Roy who has curated and is conducting the workshop.

Participants were divided into seven groups according to the kind of movie they watched recently and questioned about how many regional language films they had seen.

In the second session, Dr Piyush Roy deliberated on what film criticism involved, how to read a film from different angles, and how to do a contextual and narrative structure analysis of a movie by understanding the language of the film.

Budding journos, media scholars and students from other colleges participated in the workshop.

Throughout the workshop, three classic Hindi movies were screened simultaneously . The workshop will continue till 16 January.
