Vedanta Limited’s Knockout Cricket Tournament 2019 kicks off in Lanjigarh

Lanjigarh: Vedanta Limited’s Lanjigarh unit kicked off the most-awaited ‘Knockout Cricket Tournament 2019’ at Vedanta Nagar playground in Lanjigarh on Monday. Partnering with Niyamgiri Vedanta Nagar’s Golden Sports Club, a record 32 teams are competing in the 12-over inter-village tournament, scheduled from 25th March to 14th April 2019.

Commenting on the event, Mr. Rakesh Mohan, COO – Vedanta Limited, Lanjigarh unit said, “Sport is a common fabric which binds us with our communities in Kalahandi. We are very happy to see the enthusiastic participation of the communities in such large numbers in the tournament. It only strengthens our commitment of working tirelessly in their interest.”

Vedanta Township team won the inaugural match against Niyamgiri Vedanta Nagar Colony. Under the captainship of Diptiranjan Sahoo, Vedanta Township scored 132 for the loss of six wickets. Man of the Match Raj Khan scored a half-century in just 25 balls and to steer his team to victory. In all, six matches were played in the last three days. On 26th March, Champadeipur (73 for 5 wkts) defeated Kotraguda (72 all out) by five wickets with the help of Mohan’s quick 37 runs in 35 balls. In the second match of the day, Lanjigarh (142 for 9 wkts) edged past Muniguda (98 all out) by 44 runs. Lanjigarh’s strike bowler Glen took four crucial wickets.

On Day 2 (27th March) of the tournament, Basantapada (242 for 3 wkts) defeated Reliving Stars (100 all out) by a huge margin of 142 runs. Navin (104 in 39 balls) hit the first century of the tournament, drawing applause from the huge crowd that was present at the ground. In the second match, NVN 2 (83 for 3 wkts) outplayed The Great Bhatguda (82 for 9 wkts) by 7 wickets with the help of Man-of-the-Match Abhi’s 44 runs in 34 balls.

On 28th March, Shiba’s (60 for 36 balls) spectacular half-century helped Chatikona (138 for 4 wkts) beat Ambadola (94 all out) by 44 runs. In the second match of the day, Rengopali (115 for 8 wkts) defeated Mering (94 for 7 wkts) by 21 runs. Sasikanta was awarded Man-of-the-Match for an all-round performance (17 runs and four wickets).

With a view to promote sports within the region and build camaraderie amongst local youth, 32 teams from across the state are participating in the prestigious tournament. The teams/ villages include Golden Sports Club, Kotraguda, Champadeipur, Basantapada, Ambadola, Chatikona, Harekrushnapur, Rayagada, Kamarda, Chhatrapur, Singpur, Dakulguda, Sardapur, Gopinathpur, Bissamcuttack, Muniguda, Lanjigarh, NVN, Rengopali, Mering, Ramchandrapur, Jagannathpur, Sitapur, Bijepur, Patraguda, Biswanathpur, Lanjigarh Road, Baterlima, Reliving Stars, The Great Bhatguda and Vedanta Township.
