Bhubaneswar: “Nutrition-TB project” a joint initiative of Tata Trusts and ICMR- RMRC, Bhubaneswar in collaboration with NIRT, Chennai got a kick start today on 12th April 2017 at RMRC. The Director of RMRC, State Tuberculosis Officer, District Tuberculosis Officers (DTO) of the five study districts along with the principal investigators of the project from RMRC, Bhubaneswar and NIRT, Chennai and coinvestigators Ms. Jayeeta Choudhury and Dr. Govind Murari of Tata Trusts, Mumbai were present on the occasion and participated actively during the discussion. The inauguration was followed by a two days orientation training programme for all project staff. On this occasion Dr Amarendra Mohapatra the Principal Investigator of the Project welcomed all the participants and elaborated the outline of the project along with Dr Padmapriya and Dr Beena from NIRT, Chennai. Dr Sanghamitara Pati, The Director RMRC inaugurated the function and detailed the project inputs and outcome parameters. She also emphasized on the intensive involvement of each participants in the project to achieve the goal.
The study on the effectiveness of Food supplementation on Treatment outcomes and Nutritional status of Adults with Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Odisha is a first of its kind study in the country, to generate evidence of effect of nutrition on pulmonary TB. The project team includes Nutritionist, Field investigators- technical assistants. The study will be implemented in 12 blocks of Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Malkangiri districts. It will be completed in two year time.
The STO thanked Tata Trusts and NIRT for showing interest and conducting the project in Odisha. Senior Programme Officer of Tata Trusts Ms. Jayeeta Choudhury said she was privileged to be part of the study. Dr. Padmapriya from NIRT said the study results not only help state for policy advocacy but benefit the RNTCP programme in the country.
