Report by Deba Prasad Dash; Malkangiri: In a jolt to the outlawed CPI (Maoist) organisation, the rebel couples who were wanted by the police for a series of crimes in Malkangiri and Koraput surrendered before the Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mahapatra at the District Police Office here today.
The Maoist couple have been identified as Rama Kawasi alias Ashok (38) and his wife Weli Madkami alias Malati (25) who were carrying a reward of Rs.5 lakh and 4 lakhs on their heads respectively as announced by the Odisha Government , said Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mahapatra while producing the rebel couple before the media soon after their surrender today.
Native of Badigeta village under Kalimela police limits and carrying a reawrd of Rs.5 lakh on his head, Rama Kawasi alias Ashok was working as a District Committee Member (DCM) with the Boipariguda Area Committee of MKVB Division under the Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee since 2002.He was suspectedly involved in at least 14 killings, exchange of fires at different places in Malkangiri and neighbouring Boipariguda area in the Koraput district, Mahapatra added.
On the other, Weli Madkami alias Malati, the wife of Ashok was a native of Badtekguda village under Kalimela police limits and involved in at least five murder cases , blasting of Podia new block office building in 2013 and exchange of fires.She was working as an member of Boipariguda Area Committee of MKVB Division under the Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee since 2006 and carried a reward of Rs.4 lakh on her head, police said.
Protesting the torturing of local tribal cadres by the Maoist leaders from Andhra Pradesh and mindless killing of the innocent people in the name of police informers they have decided to bid farewell to the Maoist outfit and join the mainstream , the rebel couples said to the police.
