Bhubaneswar: In a major setback to the state government the Odisha High Court today quashed the state government’s recent amendments to zilla parishad president election rules. A bench comprising Chief Justice Vineet Saran and Justice Dr Bidyut Rann Sadangi today said that rules cannot be changed once election process begins.
It should be noted that the BJP member Sukhlal Munda of Sundergarh district had filed a case against the state government’s amendment to the election rules, and Congress had opposed the move by the Naveen government.
It should be noted that the government had made an amendment on March 8 that allowed a party agent to be present while the elected zilla parishad members voted for the president and the agent would see the vote to avoid horse trading.
