Odisha DGP suspends inspector Sandhya Rani Jena for misconduct

Bhubaneswar: DGP Abhay on Saturday suspended Patna police station Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Sandhya Rani Jena from duty with immediate effect for misconduct.

Jena came under the scanner when a video of her severely thrashing a youth, Raju Mahant, in the Patana PS in Keonjhar district on March 25 with a lathi became viral on social media. Keonjhar SP Mitrabhanu Mahapatra had ordered a probe into the incident.

At the time of the lockdown, while police officials have earned lavish praise for being frontline warriors against Covid-19 pandemic, Jena using three degree against the youth left the police top brass red-faced.

Following media reports, the Orissa Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on May 19 had directed the State Government to deduct Rs 10,000 from the IIC’s salary and pay it as compensation to the victim. The OHRC also directed the Keonjhar SP and Patna IIC to submit reports on the matter within four weeks.
