Report by Odisha Diary bureau, Boudh: On the occasion of the Boudh Mohotsav and Pallishree mela a seminar on the issue of Child Rights organised on 5th January by the District Child Protection Unit and Boudh district administration.
Inaugurating the seminar Collector and District Magistrate of Boudh Sri Madhusudan Mishra said that the seminar on this specific topic has been organised to build awareness on the issues and concerns related to child rights among different stakeholders. The district administration has identified child labour as an important issue prevailing in the district and has been working to make the district child labour free by the end of this year. Ghasiram Panda, programme manager of ActionAid as one of the panellist discussed on the rights of survival, development, protection and participation of children, the set of laws enacted to protect the rights with a special emphasis on child marriage and child labour issue.
In his presentation he told that Boudh is having the highest child marriage among the districts of western Odisha and the CDPOs who also are the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer need to be accountable to combat child marriage. Another panellist Sri Sanjay Mishra, Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Balangir shared the plight of migrant children and the institutional set up to address child rights. He urged the audience to use the facilities of child line and brought the child rights violation cases to limelight. The meeting was presided by Sri Rahul Pradhan, DCPO.
He also highlighted the provision laid down in the ICPS. Among others Dr. Santirani Das, Rajanikanta Das, Harihar Pradhan and Sankar Prasad Mishra addressed the gathering. Around two hundred participants from different walk of life attended the programme.
