Bhubaneswar: Odisha bags two medals in yachting championship held at Chennai Port scheduled on 15th and 16th of February. A yacht sailing training was organized by Yachting Association of India (YAI) in association with Indian Navy from 6th of February 2018, under ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’ (EBSB) mission of Govt. of India, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association (TNSA) and supported by the Port of Chennai. In the apex of the program, races were held between the state teams at Chennai Harbor. The Final race was held on 17th of February 2018.
In girls division, Odia girls Manaswini Maharana and Mamita Tudu secured Gold while Odia boy Sekhar Rao teamed with Sai Kumar Kandula from Maharastra secured second position in overall; Jayalakshmi Sundar from Tamil Nadu teamed with Nazakat Ishaq from Jammu & Kashmir secured second position and Hussain Bhavnagarwala from Tamil Nadu teamed with Sonia Shahzad secured first place in respective criterion. Miss Budhybari Sabar from Khallikot also participated in this Championship.
Odisha Yachting Association (OYA) secretary, legendary Limca record holder and International Scuba Diver, Sabir Bux along with Manaswini Maharana, Mamita Tudu, K. Sameya, K Dharma Raju, K. Suresh, and Ravi Munda participated in the program.
EBSB is a youth sportsperson exchange program trained in the sports of sailing by TNSA. The ten days program was incorporated with exposure of the participants to cultural prevalent in this part of the country focusing on building camaraderie among the teams whilst being trained by experts in the art of sailing.
The players from Odisha were invited on the basis of their performances in wind surfing events. International wind surfer, ManaswiniMaharana who guided the preparation of the team said she was very excited about the trip.’I have participated in wind surfing competition several times in national and international levels. But, this is a new format of surfing. It was a good opportunity for our budding sailors.’ Odisha Yachting Association is soon to start its own training centre at River Mahanadi with the help of Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre.
