Voicing the status and significance of the Odishan Revolt.
New Delhi: History stands as an evidence of how in 1817 Paika Revolt of Odisha was the beginning of empowering the Indian Nationalism, it is often regarded as a mass struggle to achieve political sovereignty and economic freedom of the then Odisha. To highlight this forgotten chapter of Indian history, Department of Culture of Govt of Odisha and ‘The Intellects’,a forum of intellectuals in Delhi jointly organized a two-day event in India International Centre.
“We should view the heterogeneous and plural characteristics of the rebellion not only in terms of the actors, but also in their interests and aims. Nationalist reconstruction has depicted the same event a popular freedom movement involving various castes, classes and religions of Orissan Society. We should call it Odisha (Khordha) rebellion,1817.” Said Akio Tanabe from University of Tokyo , along with others participants in the discussion , thus reiterating the demand to have a tag of national recognition.
Acedmicians and scholars included Amar Farooqui (University of Delhi), Dr. Annapurna Devi Pandey (Carlifornia University), prof; Naryan Rao(indian Council for historial research), A.J. Thomas (Central Sahitya Acedemy), Prof; B.P Sahoo(Delhi University) , Prof; Chintamani Mohapatra (JNU) along with others from renowned institutions. Prof;Jatindra Kumar Nayak and Prof;Abhiram Biswal presented their papers respectively based on literary texts in background of Paika Rebellion.Others from Odisha were Prof Nivedita Mohanty, Prof; Chandi Prasad Nanda, Dr. Lalatendu Dasmohapatra, Dr. Dhirendra Nanda. The speakers went deep into manifold regions behind this mass struggle which was an expression of political will and Indian Nationalism.
The symposium comprised of 5 thematic sessions on ‘Situating the Paika Rebellion: genealogy and linkeages’, ‘Paika rebellion;Comparative Perspectives”, “History and historiography”, “Revisiting the Paikka Rebellion” and”Understanding the Paika Rebellion” presented by the speakers with their opinions .
“We wanted that motive behind organizing this seminar is to spread the significance, impact and extra ordinary facts about the rebellion for a larger perspective and establish it in an international sphere by bringing it from an academic point of view.”, said D.N Rout Chairman, The Intellects and Convener of the event.
The valedictory function was graced by A.V Swamy, Member, Rajya Sabha and K.V , Rajan Former Indian Ambassador to Nepal who lauded such effort to glorify Paika Rebellion in a big way, Dr.Subhasini Barik , Coordinator presented the opening remark. Prizes were distributed among the students of quiz competition , featuring colourful cultural programmes, Manoranjan Panigrahy, Commissioner Cum Secretary Dept;Culture of Odisha, Amarendra K.Pattnaik Director ,Culture, Amarendra Khatua , Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Dr. Bhagban Prakash, Chairman, Reception Committee monitored the entire event.
