Bhubaneswar: On the eve of World Environment Day, 2018 Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF & CC) organized a Mini Marathon Run popularly known as Envithon on 3rd June 2018 at Bhubaneswar to take steps against use of plastic for safeguarding the eco-system of our country. Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a Miniratna Subsidiary Company of Coal India Limited and also one of the major coal producing companies of India provided all logistics supports for successful conduction of the programme. The mini marathon was held today from IDCO Exhibition ground, Unit-3 through Sachivalaya Marg, Patel Marg, Biduyt Marg cumulating at Kalinga Stadium and covered around 5 kms on the heart of the capital city.
Shri R. K. Dey, APCCF (Central) and Head of Department, Bhubaneswar & Ranchi Regional Offices, MOEF&CC attended the event as Chairman& Host of the occasion and Dr. T. K. Chand, CMD, Nalco attended the marathon as Chief Guest of the occasion. Among other dignitaries, Shri M. P. Sinha, Regional Executive Director, NTPC, Shri Sanjai Gupta, ED, PGCIL, Shri P. Saidev, ED (I/C), SAIL, Shri P.C. Choubey, ED, SERPL, Shri G.S. Singh, ED (I/C), IOCL, Prof. Ashutosh Debta, Director, Centre for Environment Studies (CES), Shri Brundaban Satapathy, OES-1, DEO, and Shri R. K Samal, CF (Central), MOEF&CC and the Organising Secretary of the event and senior officers from the supporting PSUs were present at the occasion.
MCL along with other Public Sector Units (PSUs) like NALCO, SAIL, NTPC, IOCL, PGCIL and Centre for Environment Studies (CES) and Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH), Bhubaneswar organized this marathon. Around 1000 students from various schools and colleges and common public took part in this marathon to promote awareness. MCL put forth a commendable effort by organizing this marathon to counter the plastic waste problems and maintaining the cleanliness of the mother world.
It may be noted here that, India is the global host of 2018 World Environment Day to combat single use of plastic pollution. The theme set for 2018 World Environment Day is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. India is organizing the event through a series of activities to urge the community and individuals to join hands to explore sustainable alternatives and reduce excess use of single-use plastic polluting our oceans, damaging marine life and threatening human health.
MCL as a public sector company also extended its hands and took part in such initiative of the Union Government.
