Bhubaneswar: Exports from Odisha have crossed Rs 52, 000 crore during 2017-18. It was revealed in a meeting with MSME ACS LN Gupta and Additional Director General Foreign Trade Anindita Sengupta here on July 2.
Gupta said in the meeting that exports on both merchandise and services sector have registered growth resulting in a total of Rs 52,412 crore. This is 28 per cent growth over 2016-17, which was Rs 42,000 crore.
Thanks to the operationalisation of international air cargo facility at the Biju Patnaik International Air Port, the port side container terminal at the Paradip Port and completion of multi modal Logistict Park at Jharsuguda, this has become possible. The container depot at Baleswar has provided more scope for exports, admitted officials.
Similarly, testing laboratory of EIA is ready for operations and testing laboratory of MPEDA has commenced operations.
While Odisha has enough potential for export business, Union Secretary Commerce Rita Teaotia has asked ADG Foreign Trade Sengupta to meet the Chief Secretary to chalk out strategy.
Earlier Teaotia visited the State and held discussions with Chief Secretary AP Padhi. Sengupta held detailed discussion over the scope of exports from the State.
While Odisha is performing exceedingly well on exports from metal and mineral sector, there is more scope from service sector as well as agriculture and allied sector. These areas are to be tapped, pointed out Padhi, sources said.
Later, Sengupta also met ACS MSME Gupta to discuss issues relating to scaling up exports.
The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) allotted space to the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) at Raptani Bhawan. This will help the MPEDA to scale up exports of marine products from the State.
Since 2014-15, Odisha has been continuously generating more business on export front, ACS MSME Gupta said.
During 2014-15, the State did an export business of Rs 19,551 crore, which went up to Rs 20,591 crore in 2015-16.
During 2016-17, exports touched Rs 42,000 crore and in 2017-18, it went up to Rs 52,412 crore. Exports from the State crossed Rs 1.03 lakh crore during last four years and the State has achieved a whopping 245 per cent growth over 2014-15, sources said.
According to sources, aluminium and products of aliminium have earned Rs 16,390 crore and iron and steel Rs 15,171 crore, petroleum products Rs 5,000 crore, iron ore Rs 4,470 crore, marine products Rs 3,087 crore and processed minerals Rs 3,051 crore during 2017-18.
The services sector has achieved an earning of Rs 3,512 crore from exports and it is on the rise, said Gupta.
While IT and ITES sector is growing in a much faster rate, however, other service sector like tourism, health and education will be able to generate more export earnings, said ACS Gupta.
