Bhubaneswar: Severe Cyclone “FANI” affected IIT Bhubaneswar from 9:30AM onward still 2:30 PM yesterday causing severe damage to the civil, electrical and horticulture works.There were no casualties happened inside the campus due to precautionary steps,but minor injury was sustained by 12 persons.
The institute made prior arrangements for all essential services in the campus.The examinations of 3rd and 4th year students werer escheduled to 6th and7th of this month. However,inorder to facilitate pre-final year students to takeup for their internship,the examination of 3rdMay is shifted to Sunday afternoon as a special case.
Prof.R.V.RajaKumar,Director of the Institute while speaking on the super-cyclone said that,“The damage caused by FANI to the Institute is more than what was expected.”Our team of meteorology research headed by Prof.U.C.Mohanty,School of Earth,Oceanand Climate Sciences also predicted the course of FANI using a hybrid of their own models and prevailing models used in practice and predicted the course of FANI.The prediction of our group coincided with those of IMD confirming consistency of the predictions,which are further proved to be consistent by public after observing the course of FANI.
We also scheduleda dmission for M.Tech courses by two schools on 4th& 5th of May2019 and a number of candidates from Northern and Western India have arrived on 3rd and 4th May particularly to participate in the test.The Institute went ahead and conducted admissions to them. Though the GRID supply is yet to be restored to the Institute,we have quickly carried out repairs and started supplying skeletal electricity toa ll the sections in the campus from today afternoon onwards.The security at IIT Bhubaneswar along with housekeeping andm aintenance team did a good job to ascertain the safety,security,sanitation for all those inside the campus.The medical unit at IIT Bhubaneswar was fully functiona l24/7 to ensure medical aid and the food was also provided on all days to ensure minimum hassle to any students.Thus the Institutes prang into action and restored normalcy in the campus immediately.
