West Bokaro: Tata Steel stands committed to encourage all its stakeholders to lead a healthy and addiction-free life with a focus on spreading the message on tobacco cessation and awareness amongst all.
As part of this commitment, on ‘World No Tobacco Day’, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), West Bokaro organised an awareness session for the adolescents of the region on ‘Harmful effects of Tobacco’ on Friday at its office near Sports Complex.
Mr Mayank Sekhar, Chief, Quarry AB, Tata Steel (West Bokaro) graced the occasion as chief guest along with Dr Sandeep Saha, Specialist, Tata Central Hospital, Mr Keshav Ranjan, Unit Head, TSRDS, Dr Jayant Tripathy, Senior Registrar, TSRDS and Dr T B Singh, Consultant, TSRDS.
More than 50 adolescents of RISHTA project from in and around West Bokaro participated in the awareness session that aimed highlighting the link between tobacco and lungs and other cardiovascular diseases including stroke.
During the session, Dr Sandeep Saha, Dr Jayant Tripathy and Dr T B Singh emphasized upon the negative effects of tobacco usage on health and environment. Apart from this, participants were also informed of various methods to keep themselves away from this habit and various measures to reduce the risks associated with tobacco usage.
While discussing about ill effects of tobacco, Mr Mayank Sekhar urged all to stay away from tobacco.
On the occasion, a group engagement activity was also organized where the participants prepared a list of negative effects on health and society.
It is worth mentioning here that Cancer is one of the ten leading causes of deaths in India and around 40% cases are due to tobacco consumption. Every year, World Health Organisation and partners mark World No Tobacco Day on May 31 to highlight the health and other risks associated with tobacco usage. This year’s theme focuses on the impact of tobacco on lung health.
