Bhubaneswar: Odia language, literature and Culture Department, Government of Odisha, has instituted another Odia chair in Benaras Hindu University. An MoU has been
signed today in this regard in BHU between Govt. of Odisha and authorities of University. State Government has provided a fund tuned to Rupees 5 Crores for the purpose. The chair has been named after legendary classic poet of Odia literature Kavi Samrat Upendra Bhanj.
Shri Manoranjan Panigrahy, Commissioner-cum- Secretary, Odia language, literature and Culture Department, Government of Odisha and Dr. Neeraj Tripathy, Registrar, Benaras Hindu University have been the signatories in the MoU. The chair will facilitate studies, research and furtherance of Odia language, literature, its cultural historiography and architectural potential among non-odia and interested students and scholars, said Shri Panigrahy.
Senior Officers from Govt. of Odisha and the University were present in the programme. Among others Prof. T.M. Mohapatra, Prof. B.K. Panda, Prof. Pradosh Mishra, Prof. K.Ghadei. Prof.Gopabandhu Mishra and Dr. Amiya Samal along with representatives of Benaras Utkal Samaj were present in the programme.
It is worth mentioning that Odia was accorded a classical language status by Govt. of India in 2014 while a special cabinet of State Govt. held at Puri in December, 2017 decided to rename the Department of Culture as Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture. In February, 2017 State Government had instituted a chair in Jawaharlal University, Delhi for propagation of Odia language and literature named after Adikabi Sarala Das. State Govt. has provided an amount of Rupees 5 Crores for the establishment of the chair. Hence, another feather has been added in the celebration of Odia Language through the second chair instituted in BHU.
