Lanjigarh: Vedanta Limited, Lanjigarh, observed the World Environment Day today with community and employees in and around Lanjigarh. In collaboration with the Forest Department, a massive plantation drive was organised in villages namely, Asurpada in Rayagada district, Batelima, Parbatipur and Sindhbahali in Kalahandi district in presence of local PRI members, community and company officials.
More than 500 saplings were distributed during the program which included fruit-bearing plants like mango, papaya, lemon and cashew among others. Present on the occasion were Sub-Collector Kalahandi Mr Mirdha Toppo, Mr. Ram Behera, Zila Parishad member, Chief Community Development Officer Mrs Harmeet Sehra, BDO Lanjigarh Mr Basudev Nayak, and village sarpanchs other PRI members in these villages.
In the internal event organised at Vedanta Township, employee families and partner agencies planted over 1000 saplings in presence of company senior management. More than 400 employees participated in an ‘Environment Awareness’ rally to emphasise on green and sustainable practices followed at the plant and aligned their slogans to support this year’s theme of ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’ The employees motto was – Avoid Plastic. If you can’t reuse, refuse.
The dignitaries leading the initiatives include members from the Senior Management of Vedanta Limited, Lanjigarh like Technical Director Mr. Philip Campbell, CFO Lanjigarh Mr. Jalaj Malpani, Chief Transformation Officer Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, Head HSE Mr. Misbah Uddin Khan, Head Projects Mr. K.A. Choudhry, GM Projects Mr. Sunil Singh, Head Security Mr. Rajeev Ranjan, and Head HR Mr. Mahendra Raut among others.
According to Mr Malpani, “Vedanta’s is committed to pursue the model of ‘Zero Discharge’ and ‘Zero Waste’ to develop a better relationship with the society and the ecology.” Vedanta’s Lanjigarh Alumina refinery is the first Alumina Refinery in the country to become a ‘Zero Discharge Refinery’. The company’s pursuance for afforestation in the nearby areas have resulted in plantation of 4.7 lakhs saplings till date. This year’s target number is 24,000. The company has already set up a biogas plant and implemented solar technology in township to embrace energy conservation and reduce carbon footprint to drive sustainably at all levels.
