Bhubaneswar: Truckloads of green garbage are being transported from the temporary transit station (TTS) to Bhuasuni, the designated waste dump yard of the city, as the TTS is swelling with loads of green garbage being brought here from different locations across the city.
The entire sanitation team of BMC through a 24X7 operation has started transporting the debris from various wards to the temporary site to make the city clean after the aftermath of the very severe cyclonic storm Fani on May 3.
The process, which started since May 4 has become more intense with the focus shifting only on the green waste as the city is being cleared by several agencies i.e. BMC, Public Works, NDRF, Odisha Fire Service, ODRAF. While the TTS sent 95 trips to Bhuasuni by 6 pm last evening it sent 80 trips by 1.30 pm today clearly indicating the fact that it might go up as the vehicles are pouring in their trips at TTS.
Sources also said that while Jagruti normally deploys 40 tippers to transport garbage to TTS, it has added 10 more today, PMR has added three more to its fleet of 13 and Ramkay eight tippers to its existing strength of 10. Lion, which is the agency to carry out mechanical cleaning across the city has added seven more to its existing seven vehicles to carry the green garbage to TTS.
In order to facilitate the collection and transport of the green wastes from wards to TTS the agencies also have increased the manpower deployment. Presently the civic body has deployed 445 sanitation staff in its 10 wards and the agencies have deployed 2,306 staff in 57 wards.
It can be mentioned here that the city generates around 550 metric tonnes of garbage in a day. However, with the green garbage taking more space as it is lighter than the usual municipal solid waste (MSW), more frequent transfer of the debris from TTS has become the need of the hour.
