Odisha: Fire in Machkund Hydro Power Plant, equipment worth 20 lakhs destroyed

Report by Nishapati Nayak; Machkund: A major fire broke out at the Machkund Hydro Power Plant in Koraput district on Friday destroying electrical equipment worth lakhs.

According to sources, the fire first triggered at the turbine penal board No. 5 of the plant following which it spread to other areas of the plant thereby intensifying the flames.

On getting information, fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse the flames.

Initial assumptions of the officials claim short circuit led to the mishap. However the exact cause behind the explosion is yet to be ascertained, sources said.

Sources further claimed that electrical equipment destroyed in the mishap has been estimated to be around Rs 20 lakh.

“Short circuit is believed to be the reason behind the blaze but the exact cause of the fire is yet to be known. Around Rs 20 lakh worth electrical equipment in the plant has been destroyed,” said an official.

In 2008, a similar fire mishap had taken place at the Hydro power plant but this time the plant incurred huge property loss and has also affected electric supply in the area, sources added.
