Kalahandi: Heavy downpour hugely disrupted normal life in Rayagada and Kalahandi where people and cattle were marooned for several days, cut off from all infrastructural connectivity in most areas. In these testing times, employees from Vedanta Lanjigarh rushed to help the people in need of food, medicines and shelter.
The company planned a seven day relief effort coordinated by the CSR, PR and Health team on ground. The teams started off by reaching out to approximately 180 families in Kataguda, Kuradhi, Kumbharguda and Jilunda villages of Kalyansinghpur Block in Rayagada District. Eventually, at least 1350 families were addressed to in Borapadar, Patangpadar, Paharpadar, Guturkhal, Kirikicha, Ushamaska, Dabriguda, Bhejiguda, Nakrundi, Amjhola and Ranpur areas of Kalyansinghpur block in Rayagada district and Thuamul Rampur and Lanjigarh block of Kalahandi district with relief-aids by employee volunteers, doctors, and other medical staff in coordination with local administrative agencies.
The last day of the Flood Relief Operation was conducted in a truly special way in association with the D.A.V. Vedanta International school in Lanjigarh. The school staff including several teachers volunteered to do their bit by reaching out to Gambhariguda, Kathaguda, Jilunda and Badakumbharsahi in Kalyansinghpur block of Rayagada district with food, water packets and essential supplies. Several of these items were contributed by more than 1000 children who are currently studying in the English medium school. Principal Shukla Chakraborty extended her full support by urging the staff to reach out to the affected personally. At least 376 households were given assistance with rice, sugar, dry foods and flattened rice etc. on the concluding day of the campaign.
During the campaign, CSR and Health teams of the company distributed relief items such as biscuits, new clothes for more than 4500 people across all age groups, bed sheets, towels, rice, dal, flattened rice, biscuits etc. Professional health workers, on the other side, had organized health camp distributing free medicines with doctor’s consultation. Health Awareness Camp and sanitation drives were conducted to sensitize people on post disaster healthcare and hygiene from water borne diseases. Drains and tube wells were also disinfected with bleaching powder.
Having seen the worst of nature, life is slowly limping back to normalcy in Rayagada and Kalahandi. Vedanta’s agile support to its local communities has been vastly applauded by the local administration. However, it was heartening to see the employees of the company and especially the children, teachers and staff of the DAV Vedanta International School to have stepped forward for the wellbeing of the neighbouring communities. Chairman, DAV Vedanta International School and Chief Operating Officer, Vedanta Limited, Lanjigarh Mr. Bimlananda Senapati said that the company is always ready to support the community in all possible manners. Everyone is inspired by the act of school children for extending their supporting hands for the wellbeing of the community.
