Bhubaneswar: Odisha Assembly on Saturday passes motion to forgive defence analyst Abhijit Iyer-Mitra for his ‘derogatory remarks’on the Sun Temple, Lord Jagannath, Odisha, the MLAs, Chief Minister and the journalists of the state following the recommendation of the House Committee.

The House Committee, which was formed to probe the alleged derogatory remarks of Abhijit Iyer Mitra against the Odisha, its culture and MLAs, submitted the inquiry report to the Assembly on Saturday.

The Committee recommended that the August House may magnanimous to consider and accept the apology begged by lyer and drop the matter.

The report stated that as per the summons Mitra appeared before the House Committee on October 23 and begged unconditional apology for the statement made by him against the members of the assembly. The Committee then directed him to swear an affidavit in a proper way in support of his deposition and produce the same before it on November 2.

Mitra again appeared before the Committee on November 3 and submitted the affidavit. In the affidavit, he begged unconditional and unreserved apology for the statement made by him before media against the members of the August House.

The Committee held six sittings to enquire into the question of alleged breach of privilege. The Committee formulated its report and finalized it in its meeting held on November 15.

The Committee observed that manner in which Mitra begged apology speaks that his statement before media is voluntary and therefore the apology begged by him needs consideration. In view of the above, the Committee recommended that the August House may magnanimous to consider and accept the apology begged by lyer and drop the matter.
