The erstwhile Himalayan Hotel of Kalimpong which came into being an incredible 117 years ago as a result of the hearty endeavours of the MacDonald family for whom it also served as a residence has had a very rich and fascinating history filled with countless interesting anecdotes and noted visits by several distinguished luminaries and famous personalities. Amongst the scores of these personalities who visited or stayed in Himalayan Hotel include several world leaders, mountaineering pioneers Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary who were the first persons to climb Mount Everest, popular Hollywood superstar Richard Gere and members of the Bhutanese and Sikkimese royal family. It was especially during the time of Christmas or holiday celebrations that there would be a great deal of revelry and merrymaking which would bring a great deal of excitement to The Himalayan Hotel. During several of these visits, guests would happily take part in a fun local card game called “Pontoon” and there would be endless lavish feasts with wine and roasts with lovely picnics as well on the hill. Everyone who visited had an affinity to being immediately endeared to the place which was blessed with a divine setting and absolutely heart-stopping views of the distant snow-clad peaks. And everyone who visited always seemed to have a difficult time leaving behind a place that had so bewitched them with a mesmeric charm.
After these incredible 117 years, the mantle has been passed to MAYFAIR Hotels & Resorts to take over the Himalayan Hotel who have lovingly restored and carefully restructured the entire property by adding on several more wings and facilities while still retaining the history and essential character of the place. The spectacular MAYFAIR Himalayan Spa Resort in Kalimpong is now open and has a much more extended lawn which affords a truly superb panoramic view of the Himalayas. The hotel has seen a rather marked increase in accommodation options as well thanks to the addition of the new wings which now sees the total number of rooms increased to 63 including heritage rooms, executive rooms, deluxe rooms and suites. Facilities at the hotel include a gorgeous swimming pool, a fully functional fitness centre, a Spa for holistic therapies, a children’s play area, a business centre, a doctor on call, a recreational room, a well-stocked library and a travel desk. Dining options at the hotel include “Tiffany” which is a multi-cuisine restaurant which boasts of seating inside a grand dining hall as well as outside under the balmy sun. There is also a dreamy little cafe called “Mamma Mia” which will serve Himalayan style street food like momos as well as house a little bakery. There are multiple event venues at the hotel for every kind of need whether it is to host a corporate conference or to throw a lavish luxury wedding. Whether it is to spend an amazing luxury vacation in the hills or to host a truly memorable event, MAYFAIR Himalayan Spa Resort, Kalimpong, is the definitive choice!
