Bhubaneswar: Between 2017 and 2020, as many as eight major sporting events have been organised in Odisha. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tusharkanti Behera said this while responding to a question by Rairangpur BJP MLA Naba Charan Majhi on Friday in the Assembly.
Out of the mega sporting events, the maximum expenditure was made for the Hockey World Cup 2018, Asian Athletics Championship 2017 and Khelo India University Games 2020, the Minister said, adding the expenditure incurred in the three events were Rs 66.98 crore, Rs 54.98 crore and Rs 28.22 crore respectively.In other events, like the Odisha Men’s Hockey World League-2017, FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers for Men and Women 2019, FIH Hockey Pro-League 2020, Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship 2019 and Sr National Open Athletics Championship 2018, the spending were Rs 10.43 crore, Rs 9,30 crore, Rs 7,83 crore, Rs 4.13 crore and Rs 0.52 crore respectively, Behera informed in his reply. An amount of Rs 11.83 crore was spent for advertisement for these sporting events. The highest spending of Rs 1.28 crore, done on advertisement, was for the Asian Athletics Championship 2017.Various State Government agencies like PWD, IDCO, OFDC, BMC, I & PR Department, OTDC, OSRTC and BSNL Odisha were assigned with different responsibilities like infrastructure development, sanitation, advertisement, transport and communication etc.
