Bhubaneswar: NIFT witnessed a landmark celebration on 1st August at KIIT Auditorium, KIIT University opposite NIFT Campus with 179 students from across 6 different disciplines graduated while proud parents, friends and relatives watched from the sea of audience members who turn out for the event.
It was also a day for the award winning Gold Medalist students of this year. Eight students bagged the Gold medal this year. While Ms Swapnil Pateria got ‘The Student of the Year’ Award, Mr Aman Raj got the ‘NIFT Extraordinary Service” Award and received form the Chief Guest. For each department NIFT offers one Best Academic Performance Award. This year Ms Swapnil Pateria from PG-MFM, Ms Pragya Ujjwali from BDes (Textile Design), Ms Rashi Padhiyar from BDes (Accessory Design), Ms Smriti Johar from BDes (Fashion Design), Ms Annie Bhardwaj from BDes (Fashion Communication) and Mr Sandeep Mohanty from BFTech have received Best Academic Performance Award from their respective departments.
The convocation began with the Convocation Parade, the National Anthem and an Invocation ceremony, and was declared open in the warm presence of Governor of Odisha, Professor Ganeshi Lal as the Chief Guest, Padambibhusan Dr. Raghunath Mohapatra, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and noted Sculptor as Guest of Honour along with the Director General of NIFT Smt Sarada Murlaleedharan, Dean Academics, Professor Sharmila Dua and Director NIFT, Bhubaneswar, Professor Sanjay Shrivastava
Convocation 2018 is a historic moment as it marks the beginning of a complete cycle when students from all six different departments have graduated this year in June. The Convocation began with the release of the Convocation Brochure 2018 which captured the essence of nostalgia and fond academic memories for all the six outgoing batch of students. This was followed by reading of Academic Report for the Academic Year 2017-18 by the Director, NIFT, Bhubaneswar, Professor Shrivastava, whereby he has highlighted many achievements and success stories of NIFT, Bhubaneswar. He informed to the audience that even with a short span of time, NIFT Bhubaneswar has been able to appear among the list of top 10 fashion institutions of India. He said this is not only remarkable but shows the commitment of the NIFT fraternity at Bhubaneswar. He expressed his joy over the placement record of NIFT Bhubaneswar by saying that in the absence of any industry base for fashion in the state, we have performed.
Director informed that placements for this year have also been almost 100% with some International offers from brands such as Landmark Group (Lifestyle), Epic Group, Must Garments etc. Most of the regular Indian recruiters such as Arvind Lifestyle, Landmark Group (India), Future Group (Bigbazaar, Central etc.), Tridents Industries, Reliance Brands and Retail, Shahi Exports, Decathlon Sports etc. were also present on campus this year and largely recruited students. There is an increasing tendency among students to startup from the campus now a days and many students are availing the benefits of startup Odisha and Startup India.
Dean Academics Professor Sharmila Dua congratulated the graduating students and parents and said NIFT stands for academic excellences and we are on the path of making NIFT the Centre of Excellence.
Director General NIFT, Smt Sarada Muraleedharan, a 1990 batch IAS Officer who has been instrumental in revamping the NIFT Curriculum this year through a rigorous process in order to re-align NIFT’s programmes with world class education to address the present and the future demands of the industry. While congratulating the graduating batch, she said that we need to play a much bigger role than what we are doing today. I am sure our students would be catalytic in bringing the much desired change for the country and society through their contribution to the fashion industry.
Dr. Raghunath Mohapatra, Member of Parliament addressed the graduating students and wished them a great career in their future endeavour.
The audience was waiting desperately for the Convocation Address by the Chief Guest, Hon’ble Governor of Odisha to speak. In his address Professor Ganeshi Lal congratulated the students and their parents again. He said, NIFT plays a very critical role right from its inception in making the Indian textiles, apparel and fashion industry competitive and ever growing. The size and contribution of the fashion industry justifies its need for an institution like NIFT. And I am happy that NIFT has been doing its best in this regard. He reiterated that the graduating students should keep on learning even they have completed their basic education from NIFT in order to contribute more to the industry, academia and society at large. In an unpredictable future landscape, our learning and commitment can make our industry and country not only self-reliant but also competitive, said Hon’ble Governor.
The convocation ceremony concluded with a Vote of thanks by Dr. Binaya Bhusan Jena, Associate Professor of the institute and then event ended with the National Anthem.
