Lanjigarh: In a bid to inculcate pro-environment consciousness among the plant personnel and promote afforestation in the vicinity, a week-long celebration culminating to the World Environment Day 2017 was inaugurated at Vedanta Limited, Lanjigarh. 5th June being the D-Day, in order to mark this year’s theme ‘Connecting people to nature’, the company carried out an environment awareness rally today, involving all its employees and workers from partner agencies. After taking the pledge for the conservation of our environment, the employees participated in a massive plantation drive. It involved community members and employees of partner agencies, the company distributed and planted more than 1000 saplings in the vicinity.
During the week long schedule, slogan competitions, poster designs, quiz competitions and other modes of awareness drives were also planned for the employees of the plant and its partner agencies along with the environment awareness sessions.
In today’s inaugural event organized at Vedanta Township, present were Mr. Jalaj Malpani – CFO Vedanta Ltd. Lanjigarh, Mr. Misbah Uddin Khan – Head HSE, Mr. Pravakar Rao, Mr. Rajeev Ranjan, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, Mr. Anil Roy and Mr. D Rabindranath Lanjigarh among others. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Malpani highlighted the various pro-environmental practices in the plant premises. “Environment Day celebrations are not just compulsory practices, rather it is an attitude. It is the responsibility of each and every individual on this planet to protect and conserve their environment. The company is onto it and urges everyone to extend their full support towards the same”, he said.
In a message to all employees, Mr. Bimalananda Senapati – Plant Head, Vedanta Ltd. Lanjigarh emphasized on the importance of individuals to bring out changes within ourselves to better our relationship with nature. He also elaborated on the annual theme recommended by the United Nations Environment Program — ‘Connecting people to nature’ and emphasized upon the opportunity for everyone to realize the responsibility to care for our Mother Earth.
According to company officials, additional 40,000 saplings are to be planted in this year by the company in partnership with community and partner agencies. The Company has also adopted various benchmarked technologies with best operational and superior environment management practices in order to develop the Alumina Refinery as one of the world’s model Alumina Refining complex. Utilization of fly-ash, adoption of environment friendly technology, water conservation and setting up Sewage Treatment Plant, constant monitoring water and air quality, Red Mud Filtration Unit and plantation of 4.5 lakh saplings so far are some of the key initiatives taken by Vedanta towards environmental care.
