Kolkata: Kolkata’s heritage is invigorated by the new pieces of art that are dedicated to Maa Durga during the Pujo, every year. A significant step in combining this with the vision for a cleaner, beautiful Kolkata is the painting of murals that has been undertaken by local Pujo committees for the third consecutive year as part of Nerolac’s Shera Para Shera Pujo.
Last year, Kansai Nerolac witnessed an overwhelming response of 145 registrations for the Shera Para Mural competition across Kolkata and beyond making it the biggest Mural competition in the state. This year, the competition has extended its participation up to Midnapur and Durgapur resulting in clocking 200 registrations. About the Shera Mural competition:
This competition has been designed with the dual purpose of giving local talent a platform and encouraging communities to take ownership of spaces around the Pujo pandal. The theme for this competition is ‘Trishul Shakti’. Participating Puja Associations nominate a wall in their locality. Under the guidance of ‘Art Mentors’, volunteers from the community clean the area; then paint an inspiring mural a wall close to the Pujo pandals. Nerolac provides the paint for these murals. After painting the community pitches in to ensure that the area around the mural is maintained, giving it pride of place in local celebrations. The celebrity judges and two representatives visit the murals shortlisted after the first round of judging from Nerolac. The shortlisted murals are also showcased through a public vote campaign on Kansai Nerolac’s social media platforms.
