Bhubaneswar: The business world has changed dramatically over the past decade. Organisations are more global and employees more diverse than ever before. Organisational structures are less hierarchical and more collaborative. And today’s networked offices are full of technological distraction that would have been unimaginable to the 20th Century manager. In this period of transition our professionals require a new set of skill to be successful. It becomes important to learn the difference between managing and leading, said Governor Dr. S.C. Jamir.
Inaugurating Second National Business Conclave, ‘Marmagya 2.0’ organized by Indian Institute of Management, Sambalpur at Hotel Mayfair Lagoon, Governor said the millennial generation now entering job sector will shape the world of work for years to come. Their enthusiasm and use of technology clearly sets them apart. One of the defining characteristics of the millennial generation is their affinity with the digital world. They have grown up with broadband, smart phones, laptops and social media being the norm and they expect instant access to information. This is the first generation to enter the workplace with a better grasp of a key business tool than their more seniors in the workplace.
The truly successful managers and leaders of the 21st Century will be characterized not by how they can access information, but by how they can access the most relevant information and differentiate it from the exponentially multiplying masses of non-relevant information. The evolving nature of business conducted by global organizations calls for a fundamentally different kind of leader, Governor observed.
In a world where materialism is prevalent, there is a very fine line between right and wrong. It is easy to fall into temptation and make a decision that will compromise your values. In the course of work and life, remember to always have a strong moral compass to guide you in your choices and decisions. Strong values grounded in truth and honesty must be what define you and are the best legacy you can leave for your future generations, Governor advised.
