Narmada water allocated to Madhya Pradesh should be fully utilized: CM Chouhan

Bhopal :Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that 18.25 MAF of water has been allocated to Madhya Pradesh by Narmada Water Dispute Tribunal, out of which total 13.04 MAF water is being used by completed projects, under construction projects, projects under contract for construction, Water Resources Department and Public Health Engineering Department action will be taken on new projects for using remaining 5.21 MAF water. We have to make full use of Narmada water and increase the irrigation potential of the state to the maximum.

Chief Minister Shri Chouhan was reviewing the works of Narmada Valley Development Authority and Water Resources Department in Mantralaya today. Water Resources Minister Shri Tulsi Silavat, Chief Secretary Shri Iqbal Singh Bains, Additional Chief Secretary Water Resources Shri I.C.P. Keshari was present.

Works should be completed on time

Directions were given during review to complete the projects under construction by the Narmada Valley Development Authority including Indira Sagar Project Canal, Omkareshwar Project Canal, Rani Avanti Bai Lodhi Sagar Project Bargi and Enforcement Project and Lower Goi Project. For this, the concerned agencies should be called and discussion should be held with them.

Works should be completed before monsoon

Chief Minister Shri Chouhan directed that efforts should be made to complete the irrigation projects which are near completion before the rainy season. Among these, Narmada Malwa Gambhir Link Project, Ujjain Dewas Ujjaini Pipeline and Upper Veda RBC are near completion.

Irrigation capacity to be increased from 33 lakh hectare to 50 lakh hectare

During the review of Water Resources Department, Chief Minister Shri Chouhan said that we have to increase our current irrigation potential of 33 lakh 77 thousand hectare to 50 lakh 74 thousand hectare by 2024-25. The target is to increase it by 1.94 lakh hectares in the year 2020 -21, 1.86 lakh hectares in 21 -22, 2.74 lakh hectares in 22 -23, 5.76 lakh hectares in 23-24 and 4.66 lakh hectares in 24 -25.

Impractical demand of Uttar Pradesh

Chief Minister Shri Chouhan said that the demand of Uttar Pradesh government regarding the proposed Ken Betwa Link Project is not practical. Under this project, a large number of forests and villages of Madhya Pradesh are coming under submergence, but Uttar Pradesh wants more water. In this connection, we will seek justice for Madhya Pradesh. If consensus is not reached, then we will work on small projects.

Get canal work done where dams have been built

Chief Minister Shri Chouhan directed that construction of canals should be started soon in projects under which dam construction work has been completed, so that farmers can get benefit of dam for irrigation.

Work in coordination with Water Resources and Narmada Valley Department

Water Resources Minister Shri Tulsi Silavat said that the goal of both the Water Resources Department and the Narmada Valley Development Authority is the same so that we can provide maximum water for irrigation to farmers. The Department of Water Resources gets less budget. The Department completes the works at a rapid pace. Water Resources Department and Narmada Valley Development Authority should work in coordination and some works of Narmada Valley Development Authority should be undertaken through Water Resources Department.

186 works in progress during lockdown

Additional Chief Secretary Shri I.C.P. Keshari said that 186 different works are being undertaken by the Water Resources Department during lockdown. The cost of these works is Rs 23 thousand 339 crore and 7879 labourers are engaged in this work.
