Bhubaneswar: “Women in Agriculture Day” was celebrated in ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture campus on 4th December to recognize the role of women, in enhancing agricultural development, improving food security and eradicating poverty. Two days long workshop-cum-training on “Entrepreneurship development of women in freshwater aquaculture” was also inaugurated today. On the occasion of women in agriculture day around 120 women entrepreneurs sponsored by Mission Shakti , Women and Child Development Department, Government of Odisha; Nalanda Foundation of ILFS Limited, Balasore; APICOL, Government of Odisha; Centre for Aquatic Livelihood Jaljeevika, Pune, Maharashtra; KVK, Khordha and ABI-ICAR-CIFA took part.
Dr. Iti Samanta, Director, Kadambini Media Pvt. Ltd, Bhubaneswar was the Chief Guest on this occasion and in her speech, she highlighted the importance of a woman in nation building. She praised the women entrepreneurs for their achievements in different fields. The society that respect Kabita, Vanita and Lata (culture, women and plant) will progress ahead said Ms Samant. Mr. Gagan Bihari Dhal, IAS, APC, Odisha graced the occasion as President of the function and focused on facilitation of woman farmer by the government to increase the income of women through entrepreneurship development. He also focused on free training programme for women. He expressed happiness that over 120 women are participating in the workshop. He also hailed the efforts of ICAR-CIFA for developing entrepreneurship among women in fish breeding, fish culture, value addition, integrated farming, pearl farming etc.
Dr. J.K. Sundaray, Director, ICAR-CIFA assured technical guidance and support for development of women farmers and entrepreneurs. He encouraged the women entrepreneurs by citing the examples of few renowned women entrepreneurs of the country. Among others who spoke were Dr. Subhrendu Sekhar Dey, MD, APICOL; Sri S.S. Nayak, Deputy Secretary, Mission Shakti, Odisha and Dr. N.K. Barik, PI, ABI, ICAR-CIFA. Among the others who spoke were Sri S.S. Seven women entrepreneurs were felicitated on this occasion to encourage them for their accomplishments. They are Dr. Nina Singh, Balasore; Miss Babuni Sahu, KVK Khordha; Mrs. Ranulata Bhoi, , KVK Khordha; Mrs. Saudamini Mekap, , KVK Khordha; Mrs. Sasmita Sahoo, , KVK Khordha ;Mrs. Bangarama, Jaljeevika, Pune and Shakti and Mukti SHGs from Parkanmala, Malkangiri, RR Network.
Dr. Himansu Kumar De, Principal Scientist, ICAR-CIFA proposed vote of thanks. Dr. (Mrs) Pravati Kumari Sahoo and Dr. (Mrs) Utkal Laxmi Mohanty coordinated the above programme.
