Centre reduces import duty on Masur dal to zero to boost domestic supply

New Delhi: The Union Government has reduced the import duty on masur dal to zero. It has also cut the Agriculture Infrastructure Development Cess on the lentil or masur to 10 per cent from 20 per cent. The move will boost domestic supply and check its price rise. A notification in this regard was tabled in both houses of Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The reduced customs duty and cess will come into effect from today.

As per the notification, customs duty has been reduced from 10 per cent to nil on lentils or masur dal originated in or exported from countries other than the US. Besides, the basic customs duty has been reduced from 30 per cent to 20 per cent on lentils originating in or exported from the US. The estimated revenue implication of this notification is about 1100 crore rupees.
