Bhubaneswar: Experts Brainstorm Over Transforming Capital Into A Global City . To ensure the sustainable development of the Capital City the BDA organised a workshop to seek opinions of experts to guide the expansion of Bhubaneswar.
With an aim to check unplanned urbanisation and ensure the sustainable development of the Capital City with effective monitoring, regulations and planning, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) organised a workshop today to seek opinions of experts and concerned stakeholders to guide the redevelopment and expansion of Bhubaneswar.
The workshop ‘Low Carbon Pathways to the New CDP for Bhubaneswar’ was organised by BDA in association with German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaftfür Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to develop the framework for Terms of Reference for Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) preparation.
The workshop aimed to bring together all relevant stakeholders and subject matter experts on to one platform for detailed discussion and consensus-building on the TOR preparation for the CDP. Besides, a discussion was held on the current socio-economic and spatial development of the city and sets out goals and guidelines for its future expansion.
During the workshop, several important issues pertaining to the sustainable development of the city were discussed to get a consensus over the methodological framework for the preparation of the nee CDP for Bhubaneswar. Besides, a discussion was held on various approaches other cities across the country have adopted for a similar exercise.
In the workshop, Rejeet Mathews, Head, Urban Development, WRI India, gave a presentation on ‘Methodological framework on CDP preparation process’ followed by an interactive Question and Answer Session. Likewise, Surya Prakash V, Senior Manager, WRI India, talked about on ‘Sectoral opportunities and challenges and their incorporation in the CDP’ followed by an interactive Q & A session. Following this, the two spoke about ‘Consensus Building on Low Carbon Pathways to the BDA CDP -2040’.
This apart, several issues specifically related to Bhubaneswar such as urban flooding, rising informal settlements, depleting air quality, solid waste management, encroachment among others were also discussed and followed by a suggestion on how to deal with it by various urban planners.
BDA Vice Chairman, Prem Chandra Chaudhary, laying emphasis on the implementation part, said: “We should encourage more public participation and other key stakeholders in planning to make Bhubaneswar a transit-oriented, livable and child-friendly eco-city and regional economic centre in future.”
The workshop concluded with an exercise that saw participants submitting their ideas, comments and suggestions in writing on how to make Bhubaneswar a truly global city.
Representatives from various key agencies like Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, Bhubaneswar Smart City Ltd, Capital Region Urban Transport, Bhubaneswar Urban Knowledge Centre and Regional Transport Office attended.
Worth mentioning here that as part of the Indo-German Technical Co-operation, the Housing and Urban Development Department, Government of Odisha, BDA and GIZ are jointly implementing the Integrated Sustainable Urban Transport Systems for Smart Cities (SMART-SUT) project in Bhubaneswar. Under the SMART-SUT project, a Low Carbon Mobility Plan (LCMP) for the city has already been initiated which will be a strategic vision document to guide urban mobility trends and development in the city in a sustainable manner.
