9 missing as fire breaks out at Telangana power plant

Hyderabad: A major fire accident occurred at 10:30 pm on Thursday night in Left Bank Canal Power Plant in Patalaganga Amrabad zone in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana.

Several blasts were heard and huge flames engulfed the fourth unit terminal of the power plant.

Nine personnel’s whereabouts are still missing.

Altogether 17 employees were at work inside the plant when the fire broke out around 10.30 PM last night.

All six units, each having a capacity of 150 MW power generation were under operation at the time of accident.

Huge flames erupted in the fourth unit all of a sudden and spread to the entire power plant with in no time. Eight employees managed to escape through a tunnel with burn injuries. The fire tenders, after three aborted attempts, managed to gain entry into the plant to save the employees.

The victims who are trapped inside the plant included 7 JENCO employees.

Telangana Power minister Jagdeesh Reddy, local MLA Guvvala Bal Raj, JENCO CMD Prabhakara Rao and other higher officials reached the power plant to monitor the rescue operations.

Officials are suspecting that short circuit might be the reason behind the fire accident. The officials fear that the thick smoke that engulfed the plant might pose a challenge to save the employees trapped inside the plant.
