IAS Association, Odisha demands strongly condemned BJP workers’ attack at official residence of senior IAS Pandian

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) members in Odisha on Sunday strongly condemned BJP workers’ attack at the official residence of senior IAS officer and Chief Minister’s Private Secretary V Karthikeyan Pandian here on Saturday.

An Extra-Ordinary meeting of the Indian Administrative Service Association, Odisha Branch, was held on 11th February, 2018 at 11 am in the wake of attack on the official residence of its two senior serving members
Mrs Sujata Karthikeyan and Shri V.K.Pandian. The meeting was presided by Shri G.K.Dhal and was attended by a large number of members.

Many members spoke and expressed deep anguish and agony on the incident. They regretted that Smt Karthikeyan and their two children had to undergo a traumatic experience particularly since Shri Pandian was not at home at the time of the incident. They expressed solidarity with the two serving members and their family. The members felt that such an attack on the private space of officers and their family tantamounts to criminal trespass, intimidation of the officers and is a threat to the life and security of the officers and family. They were of the unanimous opinion that perpetrators of such crimes must be punished with the most stringent punishment under law.

The members also noted with concern and condemned
discharge of their official duties. The members were of the opinion that such personal attacks on officers are completely unjustified and against the peace loving culture of Odisha. The members also criticised the fallacious and misleading argument of “Odia and Non-Odia Officers” being created by certain sections as the same is antithetical and contrary to the ethos and spirit of the All India Services (AIS).

After detailed discussion, the Association resolved that:
“The IAS Officers Association, Odisha branch expresses its anguish and agony on the shocking and brazen attack at the official residence of two senior serving members Smt Sujata Karthikeyan and Shri V K Pandian. The Association strongly condemns this deplorable and reprehensible act which is against all norms and values of a Civil and democratic society.

The Association expresses its solidarity with the two members and their family at this juncture. The Association feels that such incidents reflect an undemocratic mindset of the perpetrators and are aimed at demoralising and creating a fear psychosis among Government servants to prevent them from discharging their duty in a free and fair manner. Such incidents, if unchecked, not only pose a grave danger of undermining administrative efficiency but also mar the image of the State.
The Association also strongly condemns the incidents of assaults on government servants of various levels during discharge of their official duties and stands united with all associations against such vandalism, intimidation and threat given to any employee of the government.

The Association demands swift and exemplary action against perpetrators of such hooliganism and vandalism as per
law to ensure that they are never repeated in future. The Association also demands that the State Government put in place an appropriate system to ensure that all such cases of assaults on government servants are taken to their logical conclusion and the criminals do not go scot free. The association will accordingly meet Honourable Chief Minister, Chief Secretary and Home Secretary to convey its sentiments and place these demands before them.”

The association thanked various associations of government servants including IPS, IFS, OAS & OPS officers associations for having strongly condemned this incident and expressing solidarity with the officers and
their family. The meeting ended with thanks to the Chair and all the participants.
